Latvijas proletariats un revolucionarā zemniecība, 1905.-1907. gada revolucijā cīnoties plecu pie pleca ar krievu tautas un citu cara Krievijā dzīvojošo tautu darbaļaudīm, parādīja izcilu revolucionaru varonību un revolucionarā entuziasma neaizmirstamu paraugu. V. I. Ļeņins 1910. gadā rakstīja: «Revolucijas laikā latviešu proletariats un latviešu socialdemokratija ieņēma vienu no vissvarīgākajām, pirmajām vietām cīņā pret patvaldību un visiem vecās kārtības spēkiem.» (Raksti, 16. sēj., 230. lpp.)

Pusgadsimtu mūsu tauta glabājusi atmiņā 1905. gada cīnītāju varoņdarbus, to dienu nemirstīgās revolucionarās tradicijas, ko radīja partijas vadītās tautas masas.

Latvia's proletariat and revolutionary agrarians, fighting in the 1905-1907 Revolution shoulder to shoulder with the Russian people and with the other working peoples living in tsarist Russia, demonstrated an unforgettable example of exceptional revolutionary heroism and revolutionary enthusiasm. V. I. Lenin wrote in 1910: "At the time of the Revolution, the Latvian proletariat and Latvian socialdemocracy occupied one of the most important, foremost stations in the struggle against the monarchy and all the powers of the old order." (Writings, Vol. 16, pg. 230)

For half a century our people have preserved the heroic deeds of the 1905 fighters, the eternal revolutionary traditions of that day, which gave rise to the party-led peoples masses. These memories inspired in that struggle's difficult moments, whether reactionary darkness ruled all about or the cruel winds of war howled; so also they inspire us today — to selfless deeds for the good of the people. "Such strength can never melt away!" wrote Rainis. "Whoever touches their grave himself feels the rapture..."

In this album are collected together photographs and documents which the working peoples preserved in reliquaries of the revolutionary struggle. These materials, as well as the majority of the paintings and drawings reproduced in this album, are found in the LPSR State Museum of the Revolution in Riga. Also utilized are individual photographs from Liepâja's District Studies Museum and LPSR History Museum collection, as also documents from the LPSR State Central Archive collection.

The compilers acknowledge that materials within their purview don't allow fully illustrating in all their aspects all the events of the revolutionary struggle of that time (particularly scarce are materials about the proletarian strikes of 1905 and 1906). The compilers hope, however, that the album will be a valuable aid to propagandists and a complement to creative literature about the 1905 Revolution in Latvia, and will as well help the people preserve the memory about the first struggles of the Revolution, its heros, and its glorious traditions.
