Latvia was at the center of high-level diplomatic activity this week. On Friday, December 12th, Latvian Prime Minister Evika Siliņa hosted her Estonian and Lithuanian counterparts, Kristen Michal and Inga Ruginienė, for a meeting of the Baltic Prime Ministers in Rīga. The agenda focused on regional security, the international situation, the progress of the Rail Baltica project, and the next EU multiannual budget. This was the final such meeting under Latvia's 2025 presidency of the Baltic Council of Ministers.

Earlier in the week, on Thursday, December 11th, Latvian President Edgars Rinkēvičs welcomed Polish President Karol Nawrocki for a working visit. Their discussions centered on security issues related to the war in Ukraine, migratory pressure from Belarus, and the situation in the Baltic Sea.

In transatlantic relations, Latvian Foreign Minister Baiba Braže was on a working visit to Washington D.C. from December 8th to 9th to strengthen cooperation with the Trump administration. During her trip, she attended the Kennedy Center Honors, where awards were presented to cultural figures like the rock band KISS and actor Sylvester Stallone.

New data from Eurostat confirms that quality of life satisfaction in Latvia remains below the EU average, with a 2024 rating of 6.9 out of 10. In a significant move for civil defence, the Rīga City Council is advancing a plan to adapt 146 municipal buildings into bomb shelters, a project with a total budget exceeding 11 million euros.

Residents of Limbaži municipality have voiced strong opposition to plans for new wind farms in their area, with concerns about the visual impact of turbines up to 276 meters tall and strain on local roads. A tragic accident occurred on the Latvia-Russia border, where two workers died when their boat capsized on Lake Peitelis; the Latgale Regional State Labour Inspectorate has launched an investigation.

The Latvian government has introduced its first set of guidelines for Artificial Intelligence (AI) use in public administration. The non-binding document, titled “Practical guidelines for implementing Artificial Intelligence in institutional work and services,” is designed to help public bodies use AI responsibly, securely, and consistently. It was developed by the Ministry of Smart Administration and Regional Development in cooperation with the Artificial Intelligence Association of Latvia.

Jautrākā ziņā, Latvijas Pasts atgādina, ka Ziemassvētku vecītim vēstules jānosūt laikus, lai tās tiktu piegādātas laikā.
